When college towns switch back on
There is a moment in late summer when a college town changes tempo. Sidewalks fill. Porch lights stay on later. Bookstore windows shift to school colors, and the first home game begins to shape an entire weekend.
For travelers, that energy creates more than a reason to return to campus. It is an invitation to rediscover the towns around it, from Blue Ridge trails and downtown markets in Blacksburg to museum afternoons, jazz nights, and river views in Pittsburgh. These three Newport-managed hotels place you close to the traditions, family weekends, and fall events that make a college town feel fully alive.
Blacksburg, Virginia
BLUE RIDGE MORNINGS, HOKIE NIGHTS
Blacksburg does not ease into fall. It switches on. Maroon-and-orange flags appear along Main Street, the mountains sharpen against cooler skies, and Lane Stadium becomes the heartbeat of town. Yet the best campus weekends leave room for quieter rituals too: coffee downtown, a Saturday stop at the producer-only Blacksburg Farmers Market, or a drive into the New River Valley when the leaves begin to turn.
The first two Virginia Tech home games arrive quickly, with VMI on September 5 and Old Dominion on September 12. Pitt comes to Lane Stadium for a Friday night matchup on October 2, followed by Homecoming against Georgia Tech on October 17. It is a fall calendar built for return trips, old rivalries, and long weekends in the mountains.
Hyatt Place Blacksburg / University
Across the street from Virginia Tech, Hyatt Place Blacksburg / University keeps a quick campus trip genuinely easy. The pet-friendly hotel has an indoor pool and fitness center, but its best feature is location: close enough to leave the car behind for much of the weekend, then return to a calm, modern room once the campus crowds begin to thin.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
A CAMPUS WEEKEND WITH A CITY ATTACHED
Pittsburgh is a college town written at city scale. In Oakland, the Cathedral of Learning rises above busy sidewalks, Carnegie Mellon sits beside the green sweep of Schenley Park, and world-class museums turn a family visit into a cultural weekend almost by accident. Cross a bridge and the landscape changes again, from the Strip District to the North Shore and the rivers threading through it all.
Fall gives the city several different pulses. Pitt opens September with four home football dates at Acrisure Stadium, then welcomes North Carolina on October 10 during Family Weekend. Carnegie Mellon hosts its own Family Weekend October 2 and 3. Between them, the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival fills downtown stages and Liberty Avenue from September 17 to 20, a reminder that the city keeps playing long after the final whistle.
Hampton Inn Pittsburgh University / Medical Center
Set in Oakland near the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC’s Oakland hospitals, and Carnegie Mellon University, Hampton Inn Pittsburgh University / Medical Center makes an unusually practical base for a layered city stay. The Panthers host Miami (Ohio), UCF, Syracuse, and Bucknell in September, followed by North Carolina on October 10 and Georgia Tech on October 31 at Acrisure Stadium.
Carnegie Mellon Family Weekend
October 2 and 3 bring campus tours, lectures, student performances, and family programming, with registration opening at the end of August.
Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival
From September 17 to 20, the festival brings four days of jazz to the August Wilson African American Cultural Center and downtown Pittsburgh.
